Built in 1856 and first owned by a Dr Makin. Much of the surrounding houses were part of the estate until bought by the coal board. The adjacent street is still called Makin Street.There wasn't a local hospital at that time and so it is quite likely it was a cottage hospital and patients were housed on the top floor. We took the plaster off the walls on the top floor in 2019 and there were names of males and dates late 19* century. Unfortunately we didn't make a note of them whilst walking down the stairs with a group of colleagues I saw a young man, possibly in his late 20's. He had a white shirt and belt and braces. I have photographs of my father wearing similar attire and he was born 1922 so I reckon the young man was probably from the 40s/50s. I've rented out the top floor before and there were lots of unexplained events such as doors flying open, lights going off and singing and whistling.
In the 1930's it became a dentists. I saw a man in checked trousers on the ground floor coming out of the kitchen one morning. A couple of months later a man came with his uncle and asked me if he could have a look around as he had spent time there as a boy with his uncle the dentist. They gave me a photograph of the uncle and it was the man I had seen. I do still have the photograph.
After the dentist I know it was the head office of Ben Bailey Homes, in the 70s it was owned by an insurance broker and before us a security company. We purchased the building in 1988 since then there have been a lot of sightings by people who visit us. An angry man on the ground floor, two ladies on the stairs, children on the top floor and items flying across the room. Many people tell me they feel a presence and cold spots in the downstairs kitchen and toilets. Also an uneasy feeling when they go to leave the building at night.
Personally, whilst I am in no doubt there are ghosts I don't think there is anything malicious, it's just I always think they see me but I can't always see them
