Prospect comes out of a time of travels, encounters, experiences and experiments and brings together a vocal and instrumental ensemble to create a series of interlocking musical episodes. There 16 short sections, each one inspired by a place, a view, an experience, an atmosphere, a feeling, or sense of something, a fleeting impression. Themes, rhythms and melodies appear, disappear and reappear, like thoughts, sensations or memories, repeating themselves. Some are moments, glimpses, others are longer and more involved. There are no words and the idea is that the voices are part of the whole, like another instrument.

I’ve called it Prospect after Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage, and I started writing the title piece on a day’s artists residency there, sitting on his sofa, looking across at the old nuclear power station. It was a beautiful October day, and all the elements were there, in that bleak and spectacular place. The process of creating has felt a bit like prospecting, searching and sifting for fragments and deposits, as well as looking over the brow of the hill, or the edge of the cliff…Prospect started life as a duet with medieval church bells, and continued to emerge on walks on a west Norfolk marsh, a journey through New England and during a solitary day at Derek Jarman's Prospect Cottage.
