++Four session course++
For millennia, prophets have been the courageous, clear voices of justice and sanity in a world often bloodthirsty and cruel. Their words rise above the noise and chaos because of their profound connection to God, the Source, or the Mystery. A prophet’s intimate, embodied relationship with the divine agitates their being into language capable of awakening us, transforming our hearts, and healing society.
In this four-session mini-course, we will read and discuss excerpts from “modern prophets” alongside biblical prophets. Selections may include writings by James Baldwin, Simone Weil, Howard Thurman, and Ada María Isasi-Díaz, among others.
If you are curious about where spirituality meets resistance, come meet your fellow travelers. If you are seeking a lineage of practice, ethics, and hope that offers roots and wisdom deeper than culture wars, consumerism, or hyperindividualism, this course is a great place to start. We will explore ways to strengthen our spiritual and communal resources to respond with insight and courage to the authoritarianism in our midst.
This is the first course in Florence Congregational Church’s new Sacred Reading adult education series. The class is taught by Rev. Dr. Marisa Egerstrom, who holds her M.Div. and Ph.D. from Harvard and has studied mysticism, social movements, and religious history for over 25 years. The Sacred Reading offerings are designed to be practical, accessible, and inspiring, regardless of faith or educational background. All that is required is a willingness to read, listen, and reflect with others.
This course is intended as a four-session whole. If you can only make some of the dates, but still want to attend, please email Pastor Marisa at [email protected].
Wednesday evenings, 6-7:30, November 12, November 19, December 10, December 17.
$100-$150 sliding scale. The higher end of the scale makes it possible for others to attend.
