Property Law update:

A review of some recent decisions of interest in the sphere of property law, including Nazir -v- Begum and Brown -v- Ridley on adverse possession, Fosse Urban Projects -v- Whyte and Reeve -v- McDonagh on restrictive covenants and Centaur Property Estates -v- Scott on rights of way.


Biography of Speakers:

Michael Selway, Barrister, Guildhall Chambers

Michael is a real property specialist, incorporating Landlord and Tenant; Inheritance, Wills, Probate and Estates; Trusts. He also has experience in other areas, including common land and rights of common, manorial rights, public rights of way and property/estates-related aspects of banking and insolvency. Michael appears in hearings (and has acted in a number of reported or cited cases) in courts and tribunals across South West England and South Wales, as well as in London and further afield, including; Fast track and multi track trials, a wide range of interim and other hearings, case and costs management conferences and appeals in the High Court (especially the Business and Property Courts, Chancery Division and Probate Registry) and the County Court. He also regularly appears at final hearings in the First-tier Tribunal, Property Chamber, Residential Property and Land Registration Divisions, LVT and RPT. Michael also represents clients in mediations, as well as conducting negotiations and conferences and undertaking advisory and drafting work.


Jess Sharratt, Pupil Barrister, Guildhall Chambers

Jessica is a pupil barrister in the Property, Trusts & Estates and Employment & Discrimination teams. She is jointly supervised by Jay Jagasia and Julian Allsop and commenced pupillage in October 2023. Prior to pupillage, Jessica worked for over a decade in the education sector. She is a qualified teacher, and more recently has experience as a Senior Programme Manager on a major construction project for the University of Bristol. She has particular expertise on questions of equality, diversity and inclusion within higher education. Jessica has casework experience in employment issues, acting for trade union members on behalf of University and College Union. She also has experience in the Social Security and Child Support Tribunal, where she acted for appellants in disability benefits appeals.
