dadageek is a non-profit community of immersive artists and electronic musicians. Our mission is to offer education and community to those creating at the intersection of art, interactive media, and tech. Our community is filled with talented and creative technologists with a passion for sharing their expertise with others.
What is this course about?
This workshop-style course is an introduction to projection mapping and advanced software control of video for immersive art installations. The course will demystify the complexities of projection mapping, offering you a step-by-step guide to mastering advanced video outputs from large-scale projection systems to multi-screen displays.
This course will provide you with skills that can be applied to a myriad of digital video applications. Imagine creating immersive videos for theatre and performance, creating real-time video environments for live music, or designing large-scale generative video installations. Whether you're a visual artist eager to integrate immersive video into your work or a musician aiming to enhance your performances with visual flair, this course will empower you to bring your creative visions to life!
The course emphasizes hands-on learning, with each student developing their own projects through interactive workshops and in-class practice. The course culminates in a public student exhibition, where you'll have the chance to showcase your work as installations, performances, or collaborative pieces with fellow dadageeks! Enrolled students will enjoy hands-on access to dadageek technology, including projectors, LCD screens, software access, and more. What software will be used?
Our primary tool of choice for this course will be Resolume Arena; a software renowned for its real-time video generation and intricate projection mapping capabilities. Professionals and artists favor this industry-standard software in venues ranging from intimate installations to large performance arenas.
What will I learn?
This course will give you the skills to begin working with video in many complex ways including projection mapping, multi-monitor displays, multi-projector blending, and more. Additionally, we will be breaking down the complexities of hardware and software technical standards so you can feel confident designing your own immersive artworks!
Students in this course will walk away knowing:
Introduction to Resolume Arena
Basics of video content creation
Projection mapping on complex geometric surfaces
Multi-projector blending for large-scale installations
Hardware and software for driving multi-screen displays
Who is this course for?
This course is tailored for beginners and individuals new to projection mapping. Students who enroll in this course are:
Working artists looking to add new technology to their toolset,
technologists and programmers looking to explore creative approaches to tech,
musicians looking to add visuals to their music, and
anyone interested in the intersection of art, tech, and design!
What is the class like?
Each class session will meet once a week at dadaLab; our headquarters in East Austin. The class is capped at 18 students so you will have plenty of opportunities to connect with your instructor and ask questions. Your fellow students in the class will be an eclectic mix of dadageeks from artists, musicians, programmers, and creative humans excited to learn, create, and connect!

Meet your instructor!
Kyle Evans is a new media artist, sound designer, educator, and performer. He has produced and presented a wide range of performance and new media installation work throughout North America and Europe at venues such as MUTEK San Francisco, Transmediale in Berlin, the International Computer Music Conference at Columbia University, The Dallas Museum of Art, the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Vancouver New Music Festival, and the GLI.TC/H festival in Chicago. He is a founding board member, Managing Director, and instructor at the tech-art educational non-profit dadageek, board member and composer of the sound-art collective Rolling Ryot, co-founder of the immersive art studio dadaLab, and Professor of Immersive Media in the Department of Arts and Entertainment Technologies at the University of Texas in Austin. His writings and artworks have been presented in several academic and popular publications including the Leonardo Music Journal, Computer Music Magazine, Neural Magazine, and Popular Science Magazine.
