Director of the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, Professor Trevor Burnard, a specialist in the history of slavery in the Atlantic world, will discuss ‘The Black Presence in Transatlantic Slavery Archives’ with Desirée Baptiste, author of a new play, Incidents in the Life of an Anglican Slave, Written by Herself (2023), inspired by a document at Lambeth Palace Library: a 1723 letter from an anonymous enslaved Virginian to the ‘Lord arch Bishop of London’. An audio reading of the original letter, by American actor/writer Sydney Sainté will be aired during the session.
