In this lecture, Professor Sharon Weldon will take you on a journey revealing her path in the pursuit of meaningful change in health and care. Looking backwards, Sharon connects the dots to reveal how a devastating illness and an intrepid spirit took her round the world and led her to pursue a career in nursing. This was just the start of a story that depicts how her experiences, great mentors and inspiring colleagues shaped her choices, and how her resolve enabled her to question the status quo and push boundaries. Curiosity of how the healthcare workforce functioned led her to pursue research, simulation, and education in the hope of generating meaningful change that would benefit people’s health, and the care they receive. She will argue that in a fast-changing world, curiosity, flexibility, experience, courage, and pragmatism matter.
At the University of Greenwich, she is Associate Head for Research and Knowledge Exchange in the School of Health Sciences. She previously led the Centre for Professional Workforce Development within the Institute of Lifecourse Development and continues to lead the Simulation Group. Through these roles she has contributed to the development of its institutional research culture and has used her expertise to design a unique MSc in Interprofessional Healthcare Simulation. Additionally, she co-developed the Greenwich Learning and Simulation Centre (GLASC), which has won numerous accolades and awards.
