Mykolas Romeris University invites you to the lecture “Educational research and the arrival of AI: a perspective from the Centre of Instructional Psychology and Technology“ by Professor Dr. Jan Elen from the KU Leuven University on 9 October 2025, 4.00-5.30 pm, room II-230 (MRU, Ateities str. 20, Vilnius). At the Centre of Instructional Psychology and Technology of the KU Leuven research is done with respect to learning in different subject matters and at various levels of the educational system. In this lecture an overview of the research done will be given primarily focusing on the work done in the subdomain of educational technology. In addition to an overview of research questions, the related research methods will be addressed. With the broad availability of GenAI since November 2022 a lot of discussions have been done on the impact of AI. The use of AI has become the object of research and at the same time AI affects the research methods and the research tools that are used.
Jan Elen is a full professor affiliated to the Centre for Instructional Psychology and Technology of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the KU Leuven. He is especially active on the domains of educational technology and teacher education. For educational technology he has made contributions to both technology for learning (use of ICT by teachers in Flemish education, games for professional education, the implementation of blended learning) and technology of education. Technology of education has also been described as ‘instructional design’. In that domain he has been especially active in designing learning environments for complex learning (a.o. resolving ill-structured problems, critical thinking, research skills) and in studying how (typically higher education) students handle learning opportunities in learning environments. As to the domain of teacher education, research has been done on the development of ‘pedagogical content knowledge’, the way in which teachers promote critical thinking and the importance of (the development of) core practices. Methodologically the research is characterized by diversity stemming from straightforward quasi-experimental intervention studies to analyses of log-files that capture students’ behavior in learning environments.
