About this Event

*General Walk - No registration required*

Description: Join us for an immersive journey through the rich tapestry of history, industry, and culture woven into the fabric of False Creek Flats in Vancouver. This Jane's Walk will take you through six stations, each revealing a unique aspect of this dynamic urban landscape.
This walk is being organised in tandem with the "Industrial Lands Walking Tour" by Eric Aderneck. We recommend attending both walks to get the introductory and more technical deep dive experiences on the topic of urban and industrial lands.

Walk Leader(s): This walk is co-lead by a passionate team of three urbanists, Robin Chang, Ned Jacobs, and Louise Schwarz, who either research, lived near, or work on urban and industrial lands. (Read their bios below)

Starting place: Southeast Entrance of Main Street-Science World Skytrain Station. Along Terminal Avenue.

How to recognize your walk leader(s): One of us will have a bright green rain jacket on

Accessibility Info: Uneven terrain, Busy sidewalks, Strong odours, Loud noises

Travel Tips: We recommend taking transit to this walk as it starts right by the skytrain

This event is taking place as part of the Jane’s Walk Vancouver Festival (May 2-5 2024). Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. Check out other Jane’s Walks happening this year in Vancouver here.

We respectfully acknowledge that Jane's Walk takes place on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations

Walk Leader Bios:

Robin A. Chang is an urban researcher and instructor at the Urban Studies Program of SFU and the Chair of Planning Theory and Urban Development of RWTH Aachen University (GE). She brings insights from research, teaching, and learning about the sustainable adaptation of urban industrial lands in Germany and Canada to this walk.

Ned Jacobs, a resident of Vancouver's Riley Park neighbourhood, grew up in the industrial/residential/commercial fringe of Greenwich Village. Many of his mother's teachings from the Death and Life of Great American Cities would help to further revitalize the Flats, including the need for primary mixed uses; the need for concentration; the need for aged buildings; the need for small blocks; the uses of neighbourhood parks; the curse of border vacuums; gradual money and cataclysmic money.

Louise Schwarz, co-owner of Recycling Alternative, a local recycling collection and processing operation, Terraforma Systems and Regenerative Waste Labs, all 3 operations are located in the Flats. Louise has over 30 years in the recycling sector and is currently working with local green innovators to create Vancouver’s first Green Industrial Innovation District (the GrIIDTM), focusing on circular economy and inclusive, green employment.
