IGUALADA by Juan Mejía Botero (Colombia / México / USA, 2024, 81 minutes)
Francia Marquez went from being a fearless grassroots defender of the environment and land rights for her impoverished rural community to being elected Colombia’s first Black Vice President in 2022 at the age of 40. IGUALADA follows Marquez’s many years of activism and her unconventional electoral campaign in which she vowed to represent the country’s most marginalized - while herself enduring racist taunts on social media and serious death threats. This award-winning documentary will inspire hope about what is possible.
Juan Mejía Botero is a director whose work has focused on human rights, community media and collaborative, activist documentaries particularly in Latin America. His films have premiered at Sundance, HotDocs, Doc NYC and the Tribeca Film Festival amongst others. With his media work, he began a long lasting relationship with two Afro Colombian grassroots organizations: AFRODES (Association for Displaced Afro Colombians) and PCN (Process of Black Communities).
