BEGINNING LUMINARY
Kickoff for Making Luminary: Stars, Moons and Pyramids (one session class with followup work needed by students to complete).
Date: Saturday, March 22, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
For ages 16 and up.
In this 4-hour introductory workshop, you will have a choice to begin making a star, moon, or pyramid shape. This class is intended as a kickoff to get you started, and you will need to return to the studio to complete your project (luminary volunteers will be available to coach you on some evenings and weekends).
No prior luminary experience is needed, but you should be comfortable learning to work with hot glue guns, sharp cutters, and glue. Some manual dexterity and steadiness of hand is needed as well. All materials and supplies needed to create your luminary are provided. You will need to provide your own pole for carrying it (there are usually folks who donate bamboo to the public as we get close to the Luminary Procession).
Process
• Construct a frame using basketry cane (for moons) or thin bamboo sticks (for stars and pyramids), using hot glue and/or tape to hold it together.
• Glue a layer of dry tracing paper over the frame with Elmer’s glue, then trim the edges of the paper to fit the frame.
• Glue thin fibrous paper called Unryu (mulberry paper) on top of the tracing paper using glue on all surfaces (this can get messy!)
• Glue on colorful tissue paper for decoration.
• Hang the light string in the frame.
• Add a zip tie for hanging.
