About this Event
A Place to be ourselves - Making Dutch research and society more inclusive of LGBTQIA+ youth of color
Positioned at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities, LGBTQIA+ youth of color may encounter forms of discrimination and exclusion distinct from those experienced by white LGBTQIA+ youth. To date, few studies have focused on the unique experiences of LGBTQIA+ youth of color in the Netherlands. Our research program addresses this gap by shedding light on specific challenges and concerns, as well as sources of support, resilience, and joy for LGBTQIA+ youth of color in the Netherlands. We use a novel approach, combining intersectional theory, ethnographic research, and critical policy analysis, to find new ways for policies and society to address the specific needs of these youth. Ongoing interviews with this group of youth have so far highlighted not just shared experiences of discrimination and abuse, but also the joy and inspiration found in community and active societal engagement.
