Pride in Place: creating a community walk tour

Join the team from Walk Tours NZ for a free and inspiring presentation on how to create and run your own non-profit community walk tour.
Over the past seven years, Walk Tours NZ has delivered more than 100 community tours around central Wellington, focusing on the city’s rich LGBTQIA+ Rainbow heritage.
This event goes behind the scenes of creating a walk tour and is perfect for anyone passionate about bringing place-based history to light – whether it’s Rainbow histories or a topic of your own choosing.
Hosts Roger Smith and Gareth Watkins will guide you through the key ingredients of a successful non-profit walk tour – including identifying interesting stops, crafting compelling narratives, and being an engaging host – even if you’ve never done it before!
The presentation will cover both traditional methods of researching and writing, as well as demonstrate some off-the-shelf Artificial Intelligence applications that can help support your storytelling.
Bring your curiosity, enthusiasm and ideas, and discover why walk tours offer a unique form of living history – and how the experience can build community and connect people. No previous walk tour experience is necessary, and all are welcome.
The Queen Elizabeth II Pukeahu Education Centre (formerly the Home of Compassion Crèche) in Pukeahu Park has limited space, so registration is essential.

This free community event is part of the Aotearoa Festival of Architecture 2025, organised by Walk Tours NZ in collaboration with the New Zealand Institute of Architects (Wellington Branch).
