Pretzel Sunday - The 1st Sunday in LentThe Legend of the Pretzel
According to a folktale, the first pretzel was made by a French catholic monk long ago. At that time, people prayed by crossing their arms over their chest, so the monk twisted the dough to represent arms folded in prayer.
The three openings in the pretzel stand for the three persons of the Trinity. The salt reminds us that we are the “salt of the earth.” (Matthew 5:13), and must stay true to our Christian calling to make a difference in the world. The yeast represents the kingdom of heaven (Luke 13-20-21), reminding us to be a leavening influence in the world by living the Gospel.
As you enjoy the pretzels during Fellowship, may their spiritual meaning encourage you to pray faithfully and to share your faith with others.
