PRETTY JANE
Listening to Pretty Jane is a bit like leaning on your slightly older, begrudgingly wiser, yet equally confused best friend when shit hits the fan. In a mosaic of alternative and indie punctuated by unassuming pop appeal, the lived experiences of the band breathe fluidly through the tracks as their music yearns for connection, intimacy, for home or the past.
The Detroit-born and Nashville-based trio—Trevor Dalrymple [vocals], Luca DiVergilio [bass], and Ethan Strain [lead guitar]—fearlessly flaunt personalities just as outsized as these emotions, garnering them an online following of over one-hundred thousand. After amassing ten million-plus streams and earning early acclaim from A1234, SHEESH, and many others, the band continues to give form to relatable feelings on an upcoming 2025 EP.
For as much as they’re on the same page these days, Luca and Trevor hated each other when they first met. “We met because we all dated the same set of twins,” Luca boasts. Best friends Luca and Ethan began dating the twins on a road trip before Luca moved to Spain. Luca returned home to find Trevor, a new addition to the friend group, dating his ex-girlfriend. “Luca and I didn’t like each other at all,” Trevor recalls. “He was the ex-boyfriend, I was the new boyfriend, and we both had the same hair.”
Over time, a shared romanticism and passion for art forced the two together and the three friends began recording music in a cramped apartment. Nodding to inspirations such as The 1975 & Big Thief, they approached their artistry from a boundless perspective. Sharing independent singles such as “Spaced Out,” Pretty Jane began to rise with fervent support in the underground. They further fostered a tight knit relationship with the scene through incendiary basement gigs, food fights with their fans, and crowd-surfing without fail at every show.
They made waves with the breakout “Too Few Tattoos,” reeling in 7.8 million Spotify streams. A1234 hailed it as “an anthem that fits perfectly in a hangover recovery playlist, and equally so in a reflective morning playlist.” They maintained this momentum with the likes of “Shotgun Wedding,” “Fur Coats,” and “under your tongue.” Of the latter, SHEESH praised, “It personifies an emotion that only abrasive guitar tones can correctly convey, and with this single I can see a real maturation in their music."
Their mastery of unexpected and unfettered intimacy lives up to the moniker of “Music that feels like kissing your friends.” In short, the band urges their fans to make more bad decisions.
“Kissyourfriends” is a call to live your life without the fear of consequence,” Luca grins. “I think our generation is less willing to settle for pissing their lives away, and we’re proud of that. ‘Kiss your friends’ is a bit of a battle cry for that.” “We as people hate monotony and inaction,” Trevor says. “To me, ‘kissing your friends’ is like, Maybe there will be consequences, but go out, do it, and experience those emotions.” “I think that’s why we gravitate towards themes of yearning,” Ethan adds. “We’re all yearning for deeper connections and experiences.”
Pretty Jane’s desperate reach for life’s most grandiose and overwhelming emotions is reflected in the depth of their friendships. Living in the same house since their move to Nashville, they continue this reach in close quarters. “Pretty Jane is like one living and breathing organism that fluidly ties us all together,” Luca concludes. “We aren’t doing this half-assed. We live together and have really assimilated into one collective.” “We aren’t friends because we’re in a band,” Trevor leaves off. “We are in a band because we are friends. Artistically, this group is an avenue to give people the experience our favorite music has given us, but it’s also been an avenue to get closer to two people than I ever have in my life, and that’s special.”
