About this Event

Clergy & leaders/security-decision-makers for congregations and faith-based organizations are invited to join this in person training, co-sponsored with the Community Security Initiative of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), to enhance awareness of and response to an active shooter event.

  • Discuss the elements of active shooter incident response planning with guidance from experts.
  • Describe common behaviors, conditions, and situations associated with active shooter events.
  • Discuss how to recognize potential workplace violence indicators.
  • Provide information about best practices, communications protocols, and resources that will assist stakeholders to develop or enhance their emergency planning, preparedness, and response to active shooter incidents.

Kathleen Thompson

Kathleen Thompson, the Community Security Initiative's Training Specialist, is a retired 30-year veteran of the New York City Police Department. Her assignments included the First Precinct in Manhattan’s financial district, the Narcotics Division, and the First Precinct Detective Squad.

Ms. Thompson has conducted over 1,000 classes with over 35,000 students in subjects such as active shooter, terrorism awareness, detecting hostile surveillance, VBIED security checkpoints and suspicious mail and packages. In addition, she is certified by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University to deliver their Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) course. Ms. Thompson is also certified by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security as a trainer in Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings and Prevention of and Response to Suicide Bombing Incidents.
