To help Largo residents prepare for hurricane season, the City of Largo will host a one-time, drive-through Sandbag Giveaway and Preparedness Event on Saturday, April 18, from 9am–12pm at the Starkey Road Recycling Center, 1551 Starkey Road in Largo. Participants will receive up to 10 pre-filled sandbags per household to help protect against localized flooding this storm season. Sandbags will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. The event is open to City of Largo residents only, and proof of residency is required, such as a valid Florida driver’s license or a recent utility bill displaying a City of Largo address.
What to Expect:
• Drive-through pickup: Sandbags will be loaded into vehicles by City team members.
• Pre-filled sandbags: Each household may receive up to 10 sandbags.
• Preparedness education: Residents will receive information on how to properly use sandbags to help protect against slow-moving floodwaters up to 15 inches deep.
• Guests must remain in their vehicles throughout the duration of the event.
• Plan ahead to unload sandbags at home. Team members cannot assist beyond the pickup site.
• Residents are responsible for ensuring their vehicle can safely carry the load.
Resident Reminders:
• Sandbags are not effective for homes with crawl space, fast-moving water, or homes located in designated flood zones
• Residents in flood-prone areas should explore permanent flood protection solutions.
• Store sandbags in a shaded, dry area. Sandbags will degrade when exposed to the elements, rendering them ineffective.
• Do not dispose of sandbags on the beach or in storm drains.
• Disposal information will be made available at Largo.com/StormReady.
