The Platonic Academy of Melbourne is thrilled to announce that Dr Stavroula Nikoloudis will be presenting "Power and Privilege at Pylos: Insights from the Mycenaean Linear B texts" for our annual Eric Timewell Memorial Lecture. This is a public lecture, open to all who are interested in learning about Mycenaean culture and history, and origins of the Greek language. *For members, the AGM will immediately precede the lecture.
Linear B is the script inscribed into the clay tablets serving as the administrative documents of the Mycenaeans of the late Bronze Age. This script reflects the oldest surviving form of the Greek language, ca. 1450-1200 BCE. During this time, palace societies flourished on the Greek mainland and Crete, characterised by richly decorated centres and complex bureaucracies involved in the production, storage and redistribution of agricultural goods, textiles, metals and luxury items. In this presentation, Linear B tablets discovered at the Palace of Pylos in southwestern Greece are used to reconstruct the social and political hierarchy of its Mycenaean community.
Dr Stavroula (Stephie) Nikoloudis is coordinator of La Trobe University’s Greek Studies program. She completed her BA (Hons) and Master's degrees at The University of Melbourne. She received her doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin in the United States, where she specialised in the Mycenaean Linear B writing system. She teaches and researches Greek language and society from Mycenaean to modern times. She is especially interested in questions of ethnic identity and cultural diversity, migration, language development and language education. She is a member of Pharos, a community-wide alliance aimed at revitalising Modern Greek in Victoria and Australia.
