About this Event
DOMON Ken is a legendary photographer who left a significant footprint in the history of photography in 20th century Japan. Though he started the profession before the war, DOMON’s career flourished in post-war Japan. His great interest in Japanese social issues and traditional culture were realistically documented without drama through his lens. His tenacious pursuit of diverse subjects and powerful photography based on his own unique aesthetics gave him a reputation as ‘a man possessed by photography’.
Despite the towering influence, respect and popularity of DOMON in Japan where his photobooks and exhibitions have been repeatedly produced, the rest of the world might have somehow missed the opportunity of recognising his value and contributions.
Marking the first and largest solo exhibition of DOMON Ken in Paris*, TANAKA Kotaro, curator at the Ken Domon Museum of Photography where more than 135,000 of DOMON’s works were collected, will talk about the life of DOMON as a photographer, his diverse contents as well as creative process. TANAKA will also discuss where his contemporaries such as MORIYAMA Daido** or ARAKI Nobuyoshi, the globally renowned photographers, stand in relation to DOMON and the society he lived in.
* Ken Domon – The Master of Japanese Realism at Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris until July 13
** Daido Moriyama: A Retrospective at The Photographers’ Gallery, 6 October 2023-18 February 2024 – supported by the Japan Foundation, London
