Portsmouth Theatres are celebrating a shared heritage and an exciting future together with a special open day with FREE events spanning across both New Theatre Royal and Kings Theatre. Join us for a special day as we throw open our doors and invite you in for in a joint celebration of history, creativity, and community spirit. Our two iconic theatres are coming together to welcome you behind the scenes.
The Kings Theatre’s Autumn Open Day is coinciding with our 118th birthday – come and celebrate with us! Enjoy theatre tours, live performances, crafting activities, Artistic Director Q&As and exclusive looks at ongoing projects.
Join us for 30 minute History Tours, get acquainted with behind the scenes of a working theatre with 30 minute Tech Tours. If you’re brave enough to delve into the spooky history of the Kings Theatre? Join us for Ghost Talks. On the stage the talented local performers including members of the Kings School of Performing Arts, Resonate Show Choir, and Konnect will be treating you to live performances, showing off their multitude of performance skills. Join Mrs Blossom Makes for some crafting activities too!
Meet our expert archivists and discover fascinating stories from over a century of performance history. You’ll also get an exclusive look at the exciting regeneration projects shaping the next chapter for Portsmouth Theatres, including Elevation 1907 which will elevate our Edwardian gem into an iconic 21st century cultural destination.
Whether you’re a lifelong theatre lover or just curious to see what happens behind the curtain, there’s something for everyone, including children. A special bus service with our CEO on board will run between both venues so you can experience the magic of both theatres in one easy trip.

Spaces are free but booking is essential. Tickets are available in three ‘arrival from’ waves. You will need an entry ticket as well as a ticket to your chosen tour/workshop(s).
