🎬 Celebrate International Women’s Day with a Special Screening of 'Portrait of Teresa' 🇨🇺✨Join us on Saturday, 8 March at 7:30 PM at Aberystwyth Arts Centre for a powerful and thought-provoking evening as we mark International Women’s Day with a special screening of 'Portrait of Teresa' (1979).
ABOUT THE FILM:
Director: Pastor Vega
Cuba, 1979, 103', Spanish with English subtitles
A resilient Cuban woman navigates the complexities of life during the revolutionary period, balancing work at a textile factory, household duties, motherhood, and participation in a folk-dance troupe. As she pursues her passions, she faces societal pressure and tension with her traditional husband, challenging rigid gender roles in a transforming Cuba. With its sharp critique of machismo and heartfelt storytelling, the film earned Daisy Granados the Best Actress award at the 11th Moscow International Film Festival in 1979, cementing its legacy as a groundbreaking cultural piece.
PLEASE NOTE: Portrait of Teresa has not yet been restored; as a result, the film is not as highly defined as we expect contemporary films to be. However, this is the last remaining version and a rare opportunity to see a hugely important and influential Cuban film from the 1970s.
A screening sponsored by Screen Cuba and UNITE Community Wales.
