About this Event
Safety is arguably every parent’s top concern. It’s why we take infant CPR classes, and learn how to prepare a crib in the way most likely to keep our baby alive through the night. It’s the gate at the top of the stairs, outlet covers, and those things that make drawers and cabinets annoyingly difficult to open. Safety belongs in every childhood.
In America, children of all races, classes, and geographies learn “police keep us safe” as they learn to talk. Swimming in narratives of “good guys vs. bad guys,” they learn the police are a force for good - coming for the bad guys, saving the day, and keeping everyone safe.
American childhood is saturated with police imagery, from toys to TV shows to books and clothing. We have not decided - as parents, early childhood educators, and caregivers of young children - to teach them differently.
Do police belong in childhood? Explore the saturation of police narratives, and learn pragmatic tips for conveying safety to your child. All perspectives welcome.
