Interested in alterative analog processes you can do at home? Polaroid Emulsion Transfers (or lifts) is the process of taking a Polaroid print and soaking it in water until the emulsion floats and can be transferred to a new medium such as canvas or watercolor paper. This allows you to manipulate and change the image.
In this workshop we will demonstrate the lift process, providing tips and best practices, and explaining the basic equipment you will need and assist you in completing your own lift.
Participants will have the opportunity to create at least one lift with a provided Polaroid. However, they are encouraged to bring their Polaroid cameras or at least one fully developed Polaroid if they prefer (a recently taken used i-type or 600 film recommended).
No experience or polaroid equipment necessary - supplies will be provided
Ona A. Rynearson (Mendocino-NYC-LA-Mendocino) @shesearchedtobelost is a photographer, ceramic and multimedia artist, and baker (of @happyhermitbakery). With degrees in Anthropology and Art History, Ona is drawn to the story telling of human connection. You can often find Ona carrying more than one type of camera and with their award-winning baked goods. Ona also curates @mendokid90 – a community archive of youth on the Mendocino Coast during the 1990’s. They delight and dabble in the unnoticed, obscure, and unusual - always seeking the balance of playful and hopeful and love analog and vintage approaches to expression and exploration in their work.
This project was funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Mendocino County.
With the support of the Community Foundation Field-of-Interest Arts and Culture fund, Medium Art Center will hold a series of 5 in-person workshops that will be held over the Summer 2025 at our gallery location. Through hands-on art-making activities, participants will learn from workshop facilitators to tap into their creativity and learn the necessary skills to create art on their own.
Each session will focus on a different medium of art or technique and will consist of hands-on workshops instructed by skilled and experienced artists. We plan to work with the talented instructors in our community and to also bring in outside instructors to bring expanded educational opportunities. We will provide quality tools and supplies for participants to use.
These workshops will provide arts education to the community outside of a school setting. These workshops will also further the growth of our organization's offerings, specifically in the area of providing arts educational resources. The workshops will explore the idea that when provided with the proper tools and techniques, anyone can enjoy the creation of art, as art is for everyone.
