Experience the magic of traditional Tuvaluan dance and storytelling at "POKISI – Te Fatu Manava," an enchanting event presented as part of the Pacific Dance NZ Festival 2024 at the iconic Auckland War Memorial Museum during Twilight Tuesday.
This FREE show invites you to delve into the heart of Tuvalu’s cultural heritage through the vibrant art of ‘Fatele’.
At the heart of the ‘Fatele’ performance lies the Pokisi, the revered box-drum instrument that symbolises the essence of Fatele. "Pokisi – Te Fatu Manava" aims to offer an immersive exploration of this ancient art form, shedding light on its significance and its power to evoke change through dance and narrative.
The title of the project, "Pokisi – Te Fatu Manava," carries profound meaning. "Pokisi" represents the box-drum instrument, "Fatu" signifies the heart in Tuvaluan, and "Manava" embodies breath or stomach in the Tuvalu language. Together, they encapsulate the essence of this instrumental exploration of dance, stories, people, and culture.
This visionary project is not just a performance but an invitation to dialogue and awareness. Through showcasing the 9 Pokisi boxes, each representing an island in Tuvalu, the event highlights the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on Tuvalu, Aotearoa NZ, the Pacific, and beyond. The performance, lasting approximately 30 minutes, will feature interactive art pieces, storytelling, sautalaga/talanoa sessions, and dynamic dancing.
Immerse yourself in the richness of Tuvaluan culture as the Pokisi is displayed alongside mats from each Tuvaluan island and vaka paddles.
Join us for an unforgettable evening of cultural celebration, dialogue, and inspiration at "POKISI – Te Fatu Manava" as we come together to honour tradition, raise awareness, and ignite positive actions for a brighter future.
