If you've ever been curious how to use a pointed nib for calligraphy, this is your chance to learn in a hands-on, in-person setting!
About this Event

In this one-day workshop, you'll learn how to prep and use calligraphy nibs, what straight and oblique pen holders are, and you'll get to try different paper-ink-nib combinations to see what works best for you.

We'll then go over writing basic strokes and drills to get you better acquainted with the pointed pen before going on to constructing letters. We'll follow Roundhand as the main calligraphy style (Copperplate or Engrosser's Script).

All materials are included and you will get to take home your own pen holder, nib, a small ink jar, and some worksheets for you to continue your practice at home. If you have some nibs/ink/papers you'd like to bring and test during the class, you are welcome to do so!

The workshop will be held inside one of the studios at Kensington Art Supply, located near Deerfoot Meadows.

Students get 15% off on calligraphy supplies on the day of the workshop.

About the Instructor

Maxie Peña is a Filipina calligrapher who specializes in Engrosser's Script. She received her IAMPETH Certificate of Proficiency in 2023 and Certificate of Excellence in 2024. She credits her hand and eye training through courses from her teachers Nina Tran and Connie Chen.

Maxie's love for pointed pen started in 2016 when, during in an in-person workshop, a "The wand chooses the wizard" moment happened for her when she first wrote with a pointed nib. She enjoys other calligraphy nibs and brushes but she gravitates towards the cursive form and the natural swells that the pointed nib makes. Her goal in this workshop is to share that same joy that sparked her lifelong love for calligraphy. She has been teaching workshops and leading study groups since 2019.
