About this Event

Poets of Place & Body is a reading in celebration of Teresa Dzieglewicz’s Something Small of How to See a River (University of Chicago Press, 2025). Poets Meghann Plunkett, Jessica Abughattas, and T Bambrick will read in the Wanda Coleman Theater, exploring strength, care, and radical joy through lyric rooted in the environments they inhabit. A reception and book signings will follow the readings.

About the Authors

Teresa Dzieglewicz is a poet, educator, and lover of rivers and prairies. She is a fellow with Black Earth Institute, a Poet-in-Residence at the Chicago Poetry Center, and part of the founding team of Mni Wichoni Nakicizin Wounspe (Defenders of the Water School). She organizes "Watershed: Ways of Knowing the Chicago River" with Natasha Mijares. Her first children's book, Belonging, (co-written with Kimimila Locke) is forthcoming from Chronicle Books. She has won a Pushcart Prize, Best New Poets, the Gingko Prize, the Auburn Witness Prize, and the Palette Poetry Prize and has received fellowships from the Elizabeth George Foundation, Community of Writers at Tahoe, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center, and Brooklyn Poets. Teresa lives with her family in Chicago, on Potawatomi land.

Meghann Plunkett is a screenwriter and poet. Once an East coaster working at The New Yorker, she now finds herself based in Los Angeles. Her credits include Station 19 and Rebel. She is currently adapting the novel First Lie Wins for television alongside Krista Vernoff and Octavia Spencer. Her poetry and prose can be found in various journals and in her new book “What We Did To Her Made The Water Rise.”

Jessica Abughattas is the author of the debut poetry collection Strip, which won the 2020 Etel Adnan Poetry Prize. Her writing has appeared in POETRY, The Kenyon Review, Poem-A-Day, The Yale Review, and The Adroit Journal, among other places. She is a former poet laureate of Altadena.

T Bambrick is the author of Intimacies, Received (Copper Canyon Press 2022), and Vantage (American Poetry Review/Honickman First Book Award 2019). Their work can be found in the New Yorker, The Nation, American Poetry Review, and elsewhere. A 2020 Wallace Stegner Fellow, they have received fellowships from the Sewanee Writer’s Conference, Community of Writers, Vermont Studio Center, and the Key West Literary Seminar, as well as scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference and the Bread Loaf Environmental Writer’s Conference. She lives in Los Angeles and is a Dornsife Fellow in the creative writing PhD program at the University of Southern California.


About Beyond Baroque

is one of the United States' leading independent Literary | Arts Centers and public spaces dedicated to expanding the public's knowledge of poetry, literature and art through cultural events and community interaction. Founded in 1968 as an experimental literary magazine, Beyond Baroque is based out of the original City Hall building in Venice, California. The Center offers a diverse variety of literary and arts programming including readings and workshops. The building also houses a bookstore with a large collection of new poetry books for sale.


Livestream: If you can’t join us in person the event will be livestreamed on at the scheduled time of the event. If you are tuning in this way, no ticket purchase is necessary.


If you are attending in person, ticket purchase is required. Tickets will be available at the Beyond Baroque bookstore on the day of the event, but we recommend registering in advance through Eventbrite. Masks are encouraged while inside our center. Please arrive early.


Event attendees are expected to behave in a respectful and considerate manner while in our space. Beyond Baroque reserves the right to remove individuals from our events, virtual or otherwise, if they are not respecting the space, staff, fellow attendees, or performers.
