So, Chris co-runs a poetry press, Birds, LLC, and their latest release, The Mirror in Our Music, is former Carrboro Poet Laureate Fred Joiner. The launch event for The Mirror in Our Music is on June 4 at 7pm in Durham at Shadowbox featuring readings by Fred, Tyree Daye, Destiny Hemphill, and Tsitsi Jaji, films by Ben Felton, and music by Nicole Mitchell, Butler Knowles, and Joe Westerlund.
Author Tony Media says of The Mirror in Our Music: "The Mirror in Our Music is a triad: an exchange between the Poem and the Music and Art. Joiner could’ve put out a collection of poetry decades ago. But he was 'woodshedding,' as he likes to say. He was in fact honing his skills because he has that much respect for poetry—and the music! This is sacred ground to him. Holy water and altar. It is about revering ancestors and the power of the word and a higher being. And thus, here we are."
Fred L. Joiner is a poet and curator based in Carrboro, NC. His work has been published in various journals, anthologies, art catalogs, and he has presented his work nationally and internationally. Joiner recently served as the Poet Laureate of Carrboro, was awarded a 2019 Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship, and has received awards, fellowships, and residences from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art, the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, and St Mary's College of Maryland. He is also the founder of Black Ekphrastic, a website highlighting the work of Black creative writers and their engagements with other art forms. Joiner serves on the board of directors for the Southwest Renaissance Development Corporation and the Orange County Arts Alliance.
