Plazadrome and Ballyhoo Motion Pictures Present John Carpenter's DARK STAR on 35mm-Thursday, July 18th 9pm at The Plaza Theatre Celebrate the 50th anniversary of John Carpenter's career with a special 35mm screening of his first film, the sci-fi/comedy DARK STAR on the big screen at @plazaatlanta. Started as a student film at the University of Southern California with co-writer Dan O'Bannon in the early 70s, DARK STAR gradually expanded into a feature length film, premiering at the Filmex film festival in 1974. Despite only a limited theatrical run in 1975, DARK STAR enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the late 70s due to the success of sci-fi movies like STAR WARS and ALIEN and continued to pop-up in theaters as late as 1980. The reputation of DARK STAR kept growing as Carpenter directed a string of horror and science fiction masterpieces, buoyed by the home video explosion of the 1980s. O'Bannon went on to write a series of horror and sci-fi favorites including ALIEN, ALIENS, and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. DARK STAR now occupies a special place as a genuine cult film, and an early glance into the mind of a true filmmaking genius.
