About this Event
On May 7, Dr. Sam Gruber—author, historian, and former curator of the Syracuse University Plastics Collection—will lead Plastic in Our Lives, an interactive workshop inviting participants to document the plastic they encounter in everyday life through photography and video.
Throughout the month, participants are encouraged to capture their daily encounters with plastic using their phone to capture photos or video. Are we swimming in a plastic world—or drowning in it?
Focus your observations by choosing a specific setting—a room, a vehicle, or another defined space; a period of time—an hour or a full day; or a route, such as your walk to work, school, or a park. Where is plastic most present? Where has it been most deeply absorbed—figuratively and literally? Examples might include the kitchen (or just your pantry or fridge), the bathroom, the classroom, the studio, the office, the grocery store, the drugstore, or the car.
Using this documentation, Dr. Gruber will guide participants in a discussion reflecting on the presence, impact, and reduction of plastic in our lives.
