With the release of the recent House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee report calling for a ban on the export of all plastic waste from the UK by 2027, the spotlight rightly remains on tackling the societal problems associated with plastic use. However, the University of Birmingham Plastics Network – an interdisciplinary team of more than 40 academics working together to shape the fate and sustainable future of plastics – is proposing the lens of this debate is expanded more broadly, highlighting the risk of unintended consequences in tackling siloed parts of the plastics lifecycle.
The network’s initial report, Plastic: A Call to Action, launching on Friday 27th January 2023 outlines the challenge ahead and identifies initial questions. Featuring a team of expert speakers and insightful group discussion, this launch will feed into a comprehensive Birmingham Policy Commission to kick-off later in 2023, convening stakeholders representing industry, charities, regulation, and academia, seeking differing perspectives to propose workable solutions in the way society use plastics.
