Plants & Natural History Dr. Jimmy Triplett from Jacksonville State University will share stories about how people from different cultures have used plants for medicine over the years. He’ll talk about traditional remedies passed down through generations and how plants have played an important role in everyday life. He’ll also showcase the rich variety of native and regional flora found in our area, offering insight into their unique characteristics and the important roles they play in our local ecosystems.

About the speaker: Dr. Jimmy Triplett has been teaching Botany and Biology at Jacksonville State University since 2010. He’s especially passionate about the bamboo genus Arundinaria, and his research looks at how grasses evolve—focusing on bamboo and how processes like hybridization and polyploidy shape plant diversity.
Beyond his teaching and research responsibilities, he serves as curator of the JSU Herbarium, which houses more than 70,000 plant specimens. He is also co-director of the JSU Greenhouse and a collaborator on the Alabama Plant Atlas.
