About this Event
To maximize educational impact, we request participants register for all 4 classes included in this series.
Class 3 — Wednesday, March 18, 2026 (10:00–11:00 AM)
Plant Systematics Course Series (Class 3): Monocots II — Bulbs, Orchids & Bananas
This session expands monocot diversity into groups that are iconic in horticulture and agriculture: Amaryllidaceae (onion family), Asparagaceae (asparagus family), Orchidaceae (orchids), and Musaceae (bananas). We’ll focus on how botanists diagnose these families using structure—especially underground organs (bulbs/rhizomes), floral organization, and characteristic leaf/inflorescence patterns.
Expect a fast-paced, science-forward approach that prioritizes the plant parts that actually separate families.
Mini-Lab: Observation-based practice + guided drawing/labeling of diagnostic structures from provided specimens.
What to bring: sketchbook/journal + pencil/pen. Optional: colored pencils or hand lens.
