Class 2 — Wednesday, March 11, 2026 (10:00–11:00 AM)

Plant Systematics Course Series (Class 2): Monocots I — Grasses, Palms & the Commelids
Monocots are some of the most important plant groups on Earth—and a great way to train your eye for repeatable ID patterns. This session focuses on what defines monocots (and where they break the rules), then dives into major families that shape food systems, landscapes, and economies: Poaceae (grasses), Arecaceae (palms), Zingiberaceae (gingers), and Bromeliaceae (pineapples).

We’ll emphasize diagnostic traits you can actually use in real life: leaf architecture, venation, inflorescence structure, and family hallmarks that separate “look-alikes.”

Mini-Lab: Observation + labeled diagrams (including a simplified grass inflorescence walkthrough) using provided samples.

What to bring: sketchbook/journal + pencil/pen. Optional: hand lens.
