Plant Systematics Course Series (Class 1): Foundations of Plant ID + Early Angiosperms (Magnoliids)
This is a science-heavy course designed for serious plant enthusiasts and professionals who want to learn plant identification through structure and terminology. In Class 1, we’ll build the framework botanists use to classify plants: what a “family” is, how systematics works at a practical level, and the key plant parts used in identification.

We’ll then apply those tools to early angiosperms (magnoliids), focusing on Lauraceae (laurels), Piperaceae (peppers), and Annonaceae (custard apples)—families that are globally important and rich in diagnostic traits.

Mini-Lab (observation-based): Guided drawing + labeling of key vegetative and floral traits from a small set of specimens/samples.

What to bring: unlined sketchbook/journal + pencil/pen. Optional: hand lens.

Meet Gabriella de Souza

Gabriella de Souza is a plant ecologist, science communicator, and community educator dedicated to connecting people with the natural world through engaging, research-based education. Based in Wilmington, North Carolina, Gabriella brings over a decade of experience in plant science to her work, blending academic expertise with creative outreach.

Gabriella holds a B.S. in Biology and Environmental Sciences and a Master of Science in Biology from UNC Wilmington. Her passion for environmental education is evident in her dynamic workshops, public presentations, and collaborations with nonprofits, schools, and conservation organizations.

With a focus on native plant conservation and science literacy, Gabriella’s mission is to cultivate curiosity and confidence in every green thumb—whether they're just starting out or seasoned gardeners ready to deepen their ecological impact.
