About this Event
Having counselled adolescents in further education for over 10 years, Kate now dedicates a certain amount of her private practice time to clients of this wonderful age group because of how absolutely rewarding it is.
Because of the changes occurring within a teens brain, their identify changing, their world transitioning we are constantly having to dig deep to remain in their frame of reference, to convey understanding & warmth and to show that the whole of them is welcome. This attitude and these qualities are frequently challenged due to the ‘polarising’ nature of adolescence: the exploding anger or brute honesty that can derail; the imploding quiet or hostility that can deskill.
Working with teens can bring us up against our own shadow, can tap into our own teenage experiences and push us into reacting rather than responding. Maybe reacting from a more maternal position of wanting to rescue and fix; to correct and put things right; to close down expression, to ward off dangers…
This workshop will provide:
- an understanding of the teenage brain and what is taking place during this vulnerable time
- the social & relational factors at place and why friends become more important than parents!
- the identity of the teen
- the transition years and the terrain the teen is navigating
- how to cultivate compassion, care and openness in your practice to create a reparative and explorative space for your teenage client to better understand themselves, cope with their ever-changing feelings and keep their ‘feet on the ground’ through this turbulent time.
