About this Event
PIRATE UTOPIAS are ephemeral microcosms, emerging from the shadowy corners of history. These clandestine communities were forged by audacious pirates who dared to challenge the oppressive order of their time. Far removed from the constraints of land-based societies, they constructed their own maritime havens, where their audacity and renegade spirit thrived. Even as their existence is speculative and based on fantasy, we can dream of places in which stereotypes and prejudices were cast aside, and replaced by a shared pursuit of freedom and adventure.
The Daxophone Trio is devoted to Hans Reichel's 1987 invention of the electric wooden instrument, which is bowed and able to create a wide range of sounds. New York's daxophone stalwarts Daniel Fishkin and Kevin Ramsay are joined by Greek virtuoso Thrasymachos Papageorgiou. Hans Tammen's Third Eye Electric Miles Quartet (a small version of his 15-piece ensemble) is devoted to Miles' works from the Bitches Brew era. Free Bleed is the campy punk band of Katya Naphtali and Grace Kryvicky, which makes you dance and scream and laugh and jump and stuff. The evening ends with Laura Feather's electroacoustic quartet, in which she is joined by Jenn Pyron, Sara Wentworth and Nebula the Velvet Queen.
