About Sumi-e
Sumi-e is Japanese for Ink-Painting. Over two-thousand years ago, educated Chinese men used calligraphy brush strokes to create simple images
It followed that Zen Monks in China and Japan and beyond were using this art form as a type of reflective meditation.
In its purist form, Sumi-e uses black ink as the only or dominant color, whereas “Asian Painting” evolved to embrace European pigments and composition. Sumi-e remained frozen in time in Japan rom 1639-1853, a period of complete isolationism. The techniques, brushes, ink, and paper have been unchanged for centuries.
Sumi-e is beloved for its themes, style and simplicity, and enjoyed throughout the world by masters and novices alike.
