About this Event
As new immigrants landed in the Lower East Side, they brought their food and their pickling traditions with them. While the cucumber pickles of Jewish appetizing shops and delis are well known, what are some of the other pickling traditions of the Lower East Side and brought them to the city?
At this special Talk & Taste evening at Essex Market, host Alex Ritter-Jung will be joined by today’s leading food historians, local picklers, and New York City pickling experts to answer these questions and take us through the origins, history, and people who have helped to make New York City the pickling capital of the world.
After the discussion, nosh on a spread of pickled bites while you learn the basics of pickling from our friends at Pickle Guys: the Lower East Side institution for anything and everything briny! Our special guests will guide you through what makes each pickling method special, and how to get started with your own pickling journey at home.
By the end of this Talk & Taste evening, you’ll walk away an amateur pickling expert!
Essex Market's Talk & Taste series is produced in partnership with the Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD) and Edible Manhattan magazine.
