About this Event
Join experts from ODFW as we explore the phytoplankton in Netarts Bay and beyond! This event will combine research findings and expert insights with activities that are fun for the whole family.
Event Details:
We will start this two part event at the Netarts Boat Basin, where we will learn how ODFW monitors phytoplankton throughout the Oregon Coast by collecting our own water samples (10:00am-11:00am). Then, we will head back to the Netarts Community Club (11:30am-1pm) for a short “Phytoplankton 101” presentation to provide context for what we find (or don’t find) in our samples. We will have microscopes to take a closer look at our water samples, as well as stations for creating art and playing games that will help us understand the roles of phytoplankton in the ecosystem.
Why should we care about phytoplankton?
The term phytoplankton refers to a diverse array of single-celled organisms that float in the water column and convert sunlight to energy through photosynthesis.
These microscopic producers make up the base of the marine food chain, feeding planktonic animals, young fish and shellfish, and ultimately providing the energy that sustains even the largest predators in marine ecosystems around the world. According to NOAA, phytoplankton are also responsible for producing roughly half of the oxygen on Earth!
Despite their critically important role in the ecosystem, phytoplankton often get a bad rap! Some species produce toxins which can be dangerous to marine animals, humans, and pets. Harmful algal blooms are frequently responsible for shellfish closures along the Oregon coast, and early detection is essential for keeping our Oregon communities safe. This event will be a great opportunity to learn about how you can support early detection and rapid response efforts in Netarts Bay!
Logistics
- We will meet at the Netarts Boat Basin 10:00am for the field component of this event. After collecting water samples, event attendees will be responsible for getting from the Boat Basin to the Netarts Community Club for the indoor portion of the event. The Community Club is 0.5 miles from the Boat Basin, so you can choose to drive or walk (~10 minutes) between locations.
- Please dress for the weather (layers and rain gear!) and wear tall, waterproof boots if you have them!
- We will provide coffee and light snacks at the Community Club.
Please reach out to [email protected] with questions or comments!
