About this Event
Join Bakehouse artist Gabriela Gamboa for a photo walk at the Deering Estate presented on the occasion of her site-specific installation, New Topographies: 25.7617° N, 80.1918 W° , on-view through February 12, 2023.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore Deering's naturally-protected areas from a photographic perspective, focusing on composition, lighting, and the elements of landscape photography. During the walk, naturalist Jared Guerra will provide information on the history of the estate and native plants and animals. After the photo walk, participants will gather by Gabriela's installation for an informal Q+A and some light bites and refreshments.
This event is open to participants of all levels. Attendees are free to bring whatever camera equipment they wish to use: digital, film, or camera phone. This event is not suitable for children under the age of 16.
Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes suitable for the outdoors. Please bring a water bottle, mosquito repellent, and sun protection!

About the exhibition
by Gabriela Gamboa is a grouping of digital prints on aluminum panels that depict el Cerro B, a mine located in the southern state of Bolívar in Venezuela. In this multi-site installation, on view at Bakehouse Art Complex and The Deering Estate, the prints are a combination of archives, photography, and found material the artist brings together to explore how particular landscapes relate to and influence memory.
About the artist
(b. 1956, Pittsburgh, PA) received her BFA in Art and Design from the University of Chicago and an MFA in Visual Art from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has exhibited artwork both regionally and internationally at renowned institutions including Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas, Venezuela; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Lima, Peru; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago, Chile; and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia, Venezuela. In 2021, she was awarded an Ellies Creator Award by Oolite Arts, Miami’s visual arts awards. Gamboa has been an artist-in-residence at Bakehouse Art Complex since 2018.
About The Deering Estate
preserves the 1920s-era Miami estate of Charles Deering, Chicago industrialist, early preservationist, environmentalist, art collector, philanthropist and first chairman of the International Harvester Company. Nestled along the coast in South Dade, the Deering Estate is a cultural asset and historic site listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
