A member of the Albany County militia, his Dutch family connections propelled Gen. Philip Schuyler to give him a commission in the Continental Army. He participated in the 1775-76 invasion of Quebec and in April, 1777, he was the Colonel commanding at Fort Stanwix and successfully defeated Burgoyne’s western flanking movement, largely permitting the later victories at Saratoga. Promoted to General in 1781, he served in a number of important civil positions after the war, and he is remembered today as the grandfather of author Herman Melville.Lecture by Michael P. Barrett
