LOOVE Annex is delighted to welcome back the inimitable PETER APFELBAUM & his ensemble THE NY HIEROGLYPHICS for an expansive performance on the eve of March 7th, 2026. Berkeley, CA-born and based in NYC since 1998, saxophonist / pianist / drummer and composer Peter Apfelbaum is best known as leader of the genre-mashing big band, Hieroglyphics, which he formed while still in high school in 1977.
Now in its 43rd year, the ensemble—known today as New York Hieroglyphics—continues to expand the possibilities of large-ensemble improvisation. With a roster of world-class musicians, the group is celebrated for its dense, dynamic arrangements, virtuosic interplay, and unique exploration.
Past highlights include the 2005 album It Is Written and the U.S. tour of their extended composition Aural Histories (commissioned by Chamber Music America) in 2008–2009, which showcased the ensemble’s ability to tell expansive, narrative-driven stories through music.
