In 1914, Tsingtao was the crown jewel of Germany's Pacific colonies – a jewel long coveted by the Japanese Empire. In the first months of WWI, Japanese-led Allied forces besieged the fortified German port on the Chinese coast. The German defenders expected no reinforcements but refused to surrender without fighting. Historian Scott Stephenson examines the two-month siege and the final capture of the doomed garrison.
