Moneka Arabic Jazz is a project reflecting Ahmed Moneka’s life and journey in art from Baghdad to Toronto. It showcases melody from his homeland Iraq mixed with African groove and rhythm that he inherited from the Moneka Family. Because his journey brought him to Toronto, he shares this heritage and traditions with local Canadian musicians. Jazz and blues is the best genre to bridge his afro-arabic background and the fascinating musical diversity of torontonian performers. He often finds inspiration to write songs by researching old stories from Iraq as realities of the present moment locally or internationally. Focusing on the past inspires analysis, while the future inspires visions and dreams.
Opening for Moneka Arabic Jazz will be independent singer/songwriter Lacey Hill. She celebrated her newest collection of songs with a rigorous tour which saw her open for Sarah Harmer at the Niagara Amphitheatre, mentor young talent at the Song Studio Live in Toronto, and perform at the Canada Summer Games and the Folk Music Ontario Showcase. Visit her website at laceyhillmusic.com.
This event is free - no registration is required.
