About this Event
Percival Everett - Community Workshops
As a prelude to the Contemporary American Authors Lecture Series’ 36th annual Bauder Lecture, the Marygrove Conservancy is sponsoring two events based on Percival Everett's fiction on Thursday, March 20, 2025. Both are free and open to the public.
Writing Workshop: "Main Character Energy: Shifting Perspectives and Bringing New Life in the Text"
Facilitated by Nandi Comer
4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
First, Michigan's poet laureate Nandi Comer will offer a writing workshop in which participants will have an opportunity to generate and share writing of their own. Comer's 2024 workshop was superb, and this year's will be no different. Join us from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at Marygrove.
Community Reading Discussion: "Reading the World According to Jim"
Facilitated by Dr. Anwar Uhuru
6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
Next, Anwar Uhuru, assistant professor of African American Studies at Wayne State University, will host a book discussion of Percival Everett's novel James. Dr. Uhuru, author of a forthcoming book, The Insurrectionist Case for Reparations: Race, Value and Ethics (SUNY Press), holds a B.A. from Marygrove College and a Ph.D. from St. John's University. Register and learn more here. We hope you’ll take part in this year’s Bauder Lecture and workshops, whether as a reader, writer, or engaged listener. Stay tuned for more updates and be sure to register for the Bauder Lecture today! Both workshops are free of charge and open to the public. Space is limited.
