Event Description
Join Mississippi for a Just World for People Over Politics: Voting Rights Edition Gulf Coast, a free, hands-on training designed to help Mississippi voters stay informed, connected, and organized as attacks on voting rights unfold across the South.
After the Supreme Court weakened key protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, MSJW is organizing a special People Over Politics training to help Mississippi voters understand what is happening, what may be changing, and how we can work together to protect voting rights in our state. This is a critical moment to stay informed and engaged.
During this training, we will break down the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Louisiana v. Callais and explain how it changed federal protections for voters in the redistricting process. We will also discuss what these changes could mean for Mississippi voters, including communities along the Gulf Coast.
Participants will learn:
- How the Supreme Court’s ruling could reshape redistricting law across the country
- How voting maps are drawn and what redistricting means for your vote and your representation at every level of government, from Congress to local school boards
- How to check your voter registration status and make sure your information is up to date
- What the Mississippi SHIELD Act may mean for voter registration and citizenship verification
- How to share this information with your family, friends, neighbors, and community
- How to stay connected and organized as voting rights issues continue to unfold in Mississippi
Many changes are coming for Mississippi voters. This summer, Mississippi’s congressional districts may be up for change, and the Mississippi SHIELD Act, also known as SB 2588, was signed into law earlier this year. The law introduces new citizenship verification requirements for voter registration that could affect eligible voters across the state.
We are stronger when we learn together, organize together, and make sure no one is left behind.
