About this Event
Astere E. Claeyssens Artist in Residence Tom Lee, Master Puppeteer Koryū Nishikawa V and students of the Spring Course "Peering Under the Black Veil" present an evening of traditional Japanese puppetry and contemporary experiments for the Northwestern community. This event showcases the students' work over the quarter and presents one of the world's most unique traditional puppet lineages, Kuruma ningyō (cart puppetry), embodied by Fifth Generation Master Puppeteer Koryū Nishikawa V of Hachiōji Japan. The evening will feature archival footage of the kuruma ningyō tradition, performances by Tom Lee and his students, performances by Koryū Nishikawa V and an opportunity for audience members to ask questions and interact with the artists.
