About this Event

Pedro José Pastrana presents the Caribbean Jazz Trio, a Latin Jazz band that fuses original compositions inspired by the Jíbaro music of Puerto Rico with jazz harmonies and Latin Jazz grooves.

This project aims to enrich the jazz tradition by incorporating the rhythms, melodies, and cultural narratives of Puerto Rican folk music, interpreted through Pastrana's mastery of the Puerto Rican cuatro.

Pedro José Pastrana is a music creator re-thinking the concept of Puerto Rican music. Fusing the earthy quality of folk music with forward looking compositions and live performances. In 2022 he independently released his debut album inspired by the coming of age events of the past 13 years. His work has been reviewed and play-listed by LatinJazzNet, KCSM Jazz, Puerto Rico Jazz and PRPop. As a sideman, Pedro has redefined the versatility of the Puerto Rican Cuatro by performing and recording with artists like John Santos, Barrio Manouche, and Atabal.

Ayla Davila: bass
Ayla is a Bay Area native of Guatemalan descent. Her work with bands like La Mixta Criolla, Mario y Su Timbeko, La Moderna Tradición and Jesús Diaz makes her one of the most sought after players in the local and national scene. Ayla was also a founding member of Mexican roots ensemble “Los Cenzontles” and music director of the award-winning Chicanx production called “Pachuquísmo” by Vanessa Sanchez & La Mezcla.

Colin Douglas: drums
Colin is a drummer and educator born in New York City. Colin went on to study percussion at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music and Manhattan School of Music. After college he became interested in the world of Latin percussion and studied in Cuba as well as in the San Francisco Bay Area. Colin has performed and recorded with Jesus Diaz, Ray Obiedo, and Wayne Wallace, with whom Colin received a Grammy nomination in 2013.
