Cycling CHB are proud to introduce The Te Awa Classic Gravel Race. Add it to your racing calendar – January 19th 2025.The Te Awa Classic is a 58km ride starting and finishing at CHB College, Waipukurau. The course is made up of 18:18:18. 18kms of tar; 18kms of spectacular gravel and 18kms of tar through quiet country roads back to the College. Along the way riders will be challenged with some gravelly climbs but rewarded at the top by spectacular vistas out towards the east coast.
Historically Cycling CHB had this race as part of their racing calendar which has led to legendary tales of shenanigans with riders swapping bikes between tar/gravel sections; even one rider putting two tyres on one rim to prevent a puncture! (Without success!!)
Nowadays the gravel enthusiasts out there will revel in the gravel goodness of Hiranui & Te Awa Roads as they climb up to stunning views before enjoying the rollers along Te Awa Road back to Farm Road and home.
