Peatland Explorers in the Easter Holidays 2026! Join RSPB Shetland at Sandyloch in Lerwick, as we explore an area of Shetland peatland together! With lots of fun family activities, these events are designed for families to connect with nature whilst connecting with each other. Peatland staff from Shetland Amenity Trust will be joining us with activities too!
Sessions are both different, taking place each Thursday in the school Easter holidays:
Thursday 2nd April 2026: 10am - 12pm
Thursday 9th April 2026: 10am - 12pm
Please ensure waterproof clothing and appropriate footwear is worn - it may be boggy!
No booking required, donations welcome. (Suggested donation £5 per family.)
Directions: These sessions take place at Sandyloch, Lerwick. When entering Lerwick from the south road, take the first left. Keep left until you get to the large Scottish Water sheds. You have permission to park in the office car park. On foot, follow the right fork in the road up to the floating gate on the track along Sandyloch.
Parking: Car parking is available at the Scottish Water office carpark, with plenty of parking outside the tank compound.
Toilets: There are no toilets on site. Nearest toilets are at Tesco (5 minute drive from site car park)
Accessibility: These sessions take place along a croft track, which is accessible for wheelchairs, bikes and buggies, though the terrain may be rough. Some of the event will be on peatland which may be boggy, but the session can be adapted for accessibility requirements so no one misses out. Please get in touch should you have any accessibility requirements, and be aware that Ability Shetland offer loans of all-terrain wheelchairs.
Weather: Weather-related cancellations will be communicated on Facebook.
Dogs: Friendly dogs permitted but must be on lead due to livestock, and cleaned up after.
